Jing-A Taproom broke its “no beer pong and craft brew” rule last Saturday and held its first tournament. Called ‘Beer Pong Diplomacy’, it featured sixteen teams taking part in a fierce three-hour competition.

The contest ultimately came down to a single ball as Zach of Irish Volunteer and partner Edu edged Juan, best-known from Migas, and teammate Marc in a tense hard-fought match. Plus drank a lot of delicious beer.

Along with that craft beer, spectators enjoyed picklebacks, which paired Jing-A’s house juice with whiskey donated by Jameson, to raise even more money.

Overall, the beer pong and pickleback combo resulted in a rmb3800 donation to Maovember.

Irish Volunteer and Hockey Bar got into the Maovember for a third straight year with a full day and night of fun. The third annual Charity Cornhole Classic saw 16 teams pay the rmb100 entry fee and attempt to toss their way to victory, with Mad Dogs emerging as the eventual winner.

Guest could also donate to Maovember by buying a Pickle Zach — a shot of moonshine followed by one of pickle juice. And acoustic funk band Dirty City kept the energy high by performing into the night, with 50 percent of CD sales to charity. The result: Irish Volunteer / Hockey Bar raised rmb5561 for Maovember!

Recap | Migas El Asador Brunch and Porron Contest

They ate, they drank, they poured. Diners at Migas last Saturday raised rmb3123 for Maovember by joining this popular Spanish restaurant’s el asador brunch and porron contest.

As per Migas tradition, the Saturday brunch saw a steady stream of food carts circulate, piled with roast chicken, a range of house sausages, lamb chops, spare ribs and Chilean wagyu beef. Patrons could also load up at the salad, bread, soup, tortilla and dessert stations, with the latter featuring mustache-shaped cookies.

Fully stuffed, everyone’s attention turned to the porron contest, moderated by Aitor Olebagoya. The eight participants went through eight grueling delicious rounds. One measured how long they could pour wine into their mouths without breaking the stream. Another gave bonus points for bouncing the stream off one’s upper lip — the mustache zone — and into one’s mouth. Yet another involved using a measuring tape to determine the stream length. And then there was a final round where contestants simultaneously used two porrons. The winner received a bottle of Torres Mas La Plana wine!

Funds were raised via the drink revenue from the brunch and entry fees for the porron contest, an event Migas will hopefully repeat soon!

Sports bar Paddy O’Shea’s held its second annual charity quiz last Wednesday night, with about ten teams taking the challenge. True to the spirit of Maovember, quiz master Jo included plenty of facial hair-related brain-teasers, including questions about famous mustache-wearers from Groucho Marx to Tom Selleck to Freddie Mercury.

The event raised rmb1940 for Maovember, with the money coming via an optional rmb100 team entry fee, which included a tower of Tiger beer, and tickets for a raffle with a large range of prizes (see here). Nice work!

Recap | Pop-Up Beijing fundraiser tops 元3000

500 Mao Club Maovember 20153

Plenty of people popped in to Pop-Up Beijing yesterday for the bar’s official opening / Maovember fundraiser, including George Smith of Orbis, this year’s charity partner. Patrons drank the dozen bottles of donated Yealand Shiraz and Baby Doll Sauvignon Blanc, which sold at rmb30 per glass with all funds to charity, so Pop-Up donated half of the sales of its house wines, also at rmb30 per glass. Quite a few people also tried the New Zealand Taizi baijiu at rmb20 shot. The Baby Doll Sheep Photo Contest didn’t quite pan out — it might have had something to do with the amount of wine and baijiu consumed — although some people managed to get T-shirts on them.

When the cash was counted, it totaled rmb2,990, so a pair of baijiu shots were ordered for Pop-Up co-owner Glenn Schuitman and to cross that 3K mark and end at rmb3,030. Thanks to Pop-Up for a fun Sunday party!
