Page

Maovember is a month-long mission that teams restaurants, bars, suppliers and customers for fun events and good causes. This year’s partners are Bread of Life, a bakery that hires people with brittle bone disease, and Library Project, which furnishes reading rooms for needy schools throughout China. Check out our events schedule below: upcoming ones are listed first, followed by completed ones and recaps.

 Friday, November 30, 7:30 PM

Closing Party at Paddy O’Shea’s

The annual closing party at Paddy O’Shea’s is always a Maovember highlight and this year promises more of the same. The party will feature two bands, The Reprobates and The Soops, a Jameson pickleback bar, a raffle, a BIIH hockey shootout with Orchard Pig cider as prizes, the Just Dance dancers (just dancing), reps from Bread of Life and Library Project, and the usual Paddy O’Shenanigans. Saturday, December 1, 11 AM

SantaCon

Call it the hair of the dog or, rather, the deer. SantaCon Beijing and Maovember will team up again for charity. Like last year, all sales from Santa suits will go to charity. More details soon. You can also check out last year’s event here.


Sunday, December 2, 3 PM-6 PM

RendezVous at Cafe de la Poste

A second “hair of the dog” event is RendezVous, a chance to find your perfect mate through a match-making session—or should we call it maoch-maoking?—at Cafe de la Poste. The entry fee includes a glass of wine or beer and there will be some fine raffle prizes.

Sip & Shave at The Rooster (Shanghai)

Wrap up the 2018 Maovember campaign at The Rooster in Shanghai! There is a beard and beer deal for cock-a-doodle-dudes: get both for rmb100. And a beer deal for those with no hair removal needs. All trims are courtesy of Homie Barbershop.

Launch Party at XL Bar & Restaurant

Maovember kicks off year six with a party at XL! Get your 2018 Maovember pin and enjoy games, drinks (happy hour until 9 PM) and food (half-price sausage deals). The delivery van we funded for Bread of Life will be on site so you can see your donations in action. Dog Pub Crawl

You and your pooch can help Maovember by joining the second annual Dog Pub Crawl, with stops at De Refter, XL Bar & Restaurant, Jing-A Taproom and Paddy O’Shea’s. Donate rmb100 to Maovember and you get a drink at each venue while your pooch gets snacks from Penny’s Food Studio. [See the 2018 event recap here.]

MulledVember

Guy Fawkes meets mulled cider meets funk and disco music meets Maovember on November 4 for an event one critic says may decide the fate of the human race. Oh, baby. Plus, there will be toffee apples. [See the 2018 event recap here.]


Sunday, November 11, 6 PM

Schnapps Fest II

Schnapps til you drops! After last year’s successful fundraiser, Groovy Schiller’s is back with Schnapps Fest II. Get seven Schnapps plus finger foods for just 元150. Last year’s lineup included tipples from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, many of them hand-carried to China and explained by Johan Marchart and Jack Zhou. Expect a few games of darts for charity, too. Use the QR code in the poster to register.


Friday, November 16, 6-9 PM

Terrace Party at Hulu

Casual fine dining venue Hulu will host a Maovember winter warm-up party, with three drinks and a free flow of canapes for just 元150, all revenue to Maovember.

Along with tasty bites and beverages—and heated areas for those who get *too* chilled out or forget their winter coats—there will be a ‘hulu hoops’ ring toss with prizes from Wine Republic and The Cider Guy. Plus Maovember macaroons by The 3D Food Company.

Hulu owner Ignace Lecleir is also donating one mao for each rmb spent in the restaurant November 16, 17 and 18.

MaovemBEER

Call it MaovemBEER. Or BRAUvember. Even MaltVember. On Saturday, November 17, brewpubs in three cities will party for Maovember partners Library Project and Bread of Life Bakery. Here’s a quote, a recreation and a libation for each place!

Jing-A | 2 PM | Beijing

“A pickleback is a whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice. I suggest Tuhao Gold Pils after that.”—Emmy Andreasson

Recreation. A 2 PM pub quiz in Jing A’s (Pickle) Back Bar. Round winners get picklebacks, overall winners get merchandise, beer and vouchers. The 元100 fee per team of four goes to MVB. Sign up via WeChat at Emmy_Andreasson.

Libation. 元25 picklebacks all afternoon for MVB. And the first 25 brunch diners get a free beer.

Boxing Cat | 3-7 PM | Beijing

“Boxing Cat has four ways to help Maovember!”—Terry

Recreation: 元15 tickets to win merchandise and beer flights.

Libation: 300 ml pours of TKO IPA for 元20. Plus 25 beer flight tickets worth 元75 on sale for just 元25 (for use on visits after November 17). Plus a takeaway beer deal. All to support MVB.

Arrow Factory | All Day | Beijing

“We love a good beer sesh, especially when it’s for a good cause!”—Justin Culkin

Recreation. 元20 tickets for a draw that includes a 24-bottle case of Clone Easy Ale, an Arrow Factory T-shirt and a 元100 gift voucher.

Libation. 元5 from every beer sold on Saturday goes to charity, including the buy one, get one free select brew deal.

Nanmen | 9 PM | Chengdu

“Me and Sonny Gyalzur from Shangri-La Beer are partnering Yunnan and Sichuan for a good cause!”—Lordrew

Recreation. A beer pong tournament with a 元500 entry fee for MVB. Each team gets a free T-shirt, opener and beer from both Nanmen in Chengdu and Shangri-La in Yunnan.

Libation. One dedicated tap of Nanmen and of Shangri-La beer, with funds to MVB.

WE Brewery | 2 PM | Tianjin

“Social responsibility and fun can be harmonized via good beer.”—Steve Wang

Recreation. Use your arm for more than raising pints: join the WE corn toss tournament. Lots of prizes. And the 元500 entry fee goes to MVB.

Libation. A tab war with the highest bill to MVB. Plus a draw, with tickets at 元10.


Saturday, November 17, 2 PM

Corn Toss in Tianjin

WE Brewery put Tianjin on the Maovember map and is back for more. Owner Steve Wang even brought his beer to Beijing last year to support the annual Irish Volunteer Corn Toss Tourney. Now he is organizing a tournament of his own as well as a “tab war” among his customers. More details here. And check out WE’s 2017 charity efforts here.

Wednesday, November 21, 9 PM

Q Mex Pub Quiz V

Q Mex will host its fifth annual charity quiz, with brainteasers in English and Chinese. The optional rmb100 entry fee includes two pitchers of Carlsberg and goes to maovember. There will be a charity auction and also a drinks deal. The action starts at 9 PM but you best get there early as it’s been packed every year. (Check out the Q Mex quizzes from 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014.)




Thursday, November 22, 6 PM & 8:30 PM

Mao’roccan Thanksgiving

Caravan returns with its third annual ‘Mao’roccan’ Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy a four-course turkey dinner with a Moroccan twist by owner Badr Benjelloun. Harvest salad, smoked cranberry butter squash soup, turkey platter and Bread of Life carrot cake all for just 元150 prepaid or, if available, 元200 at the door, with all proceeds to Maovember. (Vegetarian option available.) Hutong Pub Crawl

Cafe de La Poste, The Great Outdoors & Side Street are teaming up for a Maovember pub crawl. The 元100 entry fee gets attendees a drink and a snack at each venue, with half the money going to Maovember. Expect a mobile drink unit, a game and discounts. Write bands for the event now on sale at all three locations.
