Paddy O’Shea’s completed a trio of maovember events by holding a Mustache Bash last night that included a live band, a raffle and the crowning of a Mustache King and a Mustache Queen. Members of the more than a half-dozen sports teams sponsored by Paddy O’Shea’s had the place bursting at the seams. Shots of Bushmills were sold for 20 yuan, with all proceeds to maovember. The total raised from draw tickets and shots was 3040 yuan.

Paddy O’Shea’s also supported this year’s maovember campaign with a road hockey and mulled wine night and a charity quiz and mystery draw.

Maovemberfest: Beatles and beer, pizzas and pies, funk and Fu shots this Sunday

The end of November is nigh and maovember will celebrate with a two-venue event this Sunday that includes a pair of bands, a pie-eating contest and plenty of pizza, beer and wine. The festivities — maovemberfest — will be jointly held by cocktail specialists George’s and speakeasy Fubar, two veteran establishments a few meters apart in the southeast corner of Workers Stadium.

George’s (3 PM to 6 PM): Spend a Sunday afternoon singing along with The Beijing Beatles while enjoying lots of food and drink, including:

  • 18-inch pizzas from Kro’s Nest (75 kuai per pie). We will have 20 pizzas, including Pepperoni Explosion, Sausage Fest, Honolulu Hurricane and Veg-Head, at a fraction of their regular price. Each can feed three people. First come, first served.
  • Wine from La Cava (25 kuai per glass). La Cava owner Mariano Larrain will be on hand to pour a selection of the wines from his nearby shop.
  • Beer from Heineken and Tiger (25 kuai per bottle). If wine isn’t your thing, grab a cold beer while enjoying the Beatles and hanging out with friends. Thank to Kenny Lew for the brew.

Finally, up to five people can each go on stage and sing with The Beijing Beatles. The fee is 100 yuan and, as with the pizzas, beer and wine, all proceeds go to maovember.

Fubar is up next and will host a Two Guys pie-eating contest headed by heavyweights Benny Bongo and Zona — see Maodown at Fubar — at 6:30 PM and tunes by DJ BB Deng. Enjoy tasty beverages along with the entertainment, including:

  • Maovember Beer (25 yuan): Vedett has again made specially labeled bottles for maovember and these will be exclusive to Fubar. Want a nice souvenir of the past month — or to just enjoy a nice Belgian beer? Stop by and get one.
  • Grace Vineyard People’s Series Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon (25 yuan) from Torres China. Enjoy a few glasses from what is widely deemed the best Chinese winery of the past decade.
  • Fu Shots (20 yuan). Fubar will be creating a special shot for maovember.

All proceeds from the beer, wine, shots and pie-eating contest — 100 yuan per person — go to maovember.

Look for more posts on this coming Sunday’s fun fest soon!

Maodown at Fubar: Bongo and Zona Take on The World in Pie-Eating Contest

Before Two Guys and a Pie closed shop earlier this year, it saw a succession of pie kings crowned due to their intestinal fortitude. No two were more worthy of fame than Benny Bongo, the last king to be crowned after he ate 12 pies, and Zona, who had until then held the record, with 11 pies.

The pair will face off in a three-pie speed-eating duel on November 30 at Fubar, part of an evening that will include live entertainment as well as beer, wine and shot sales going to maovember. For those who like to take on this city’s pie-eating royalty, we also have space for four challengers.

The entry fee is 100 yuan, with all proceeds to maovember. And to the winner will go a very nice prize and, of course, the glory of pie-eating fame.

Sixteen teams joined last night’s quiz at Mexican bar and grill Q Mex and helped raise over 3500 yuan for maovember. Teams paid a suggested entry fee of 80 yuan, which got them a second pitcher of beer, and also chipped in via a lucky draw and sales of tequila picklebacks. Co-owner Stefan Schober also ran a pool tournament in which the loser of each game donated 100 yuan to maovember. By the time quiz masters Jay and Reece revealed the last answer — and the last pickleback was shot — Q Mex had raised 3781.9 yuan.

After beating its original goal earlier this month of raising 20,000 yuan to fund 25 cataract operations via Orbis, maovember has poked past its revised goal of 80,000 yuan and 100 surgeries.

With donations from CHEERSMashup and Great Leap Brewery over the past few days, plus pin sales, the maovember total is now 80,242 yuan. With events still on the slate, there is time to fund even more surgeries before this year’s campaign comes to a close.

Next up is Paddy O’Shea’s Mustache Bash on Friday, with another four or five events in the queue. See here for details.

Hot stuff: CHEERS Raises 5,000 Yuan with Mulled Wine

For three weekends this month, CHEERS sold mulled wine for maovember at 20 yuan per serving, first at the Sanlitun North Street shop and then at the Xindong Road Shop. It capped that effort with a final night screening of The Big Lebowski, complete with a drinking game organized by marketing director Philippe.

The result? Not only did plenty of people get a winter warm-up from that mulled wine this month but CHEERS raised 2,500 yuan for maovember. CHEERS co-owner Claudia Masueger then matched it with another 2,500 yuan from the company’s foundation for a total of 5,000 yuan, as the company supported maovember for a second straight year.

Maovember pins are an important part of our fundraising campaign. Each pins costs 50 yuan. And as a cataract surgery through Orbis costs 800 yuan, that means every time we sell 16 pins, we can fund another operation. Here is our newest collage of people who purchased pins. You can see all the collages here.

Dozens of dedicated beer pong aficionados bounced, tossed and trash-talked their way through an afternoon that helped raise money for maovember. The tournament — organized monthly by Mashup and held at Kokomo — went by the moniker Sunday FUNday and saw revenue from team fees and a raffle go to charity, with a total of 2100 yuan raised. The tournament was the second of a two-part Mashup weekend that included teaming up with Deli de Luxe on Saturday for the annual Turkey Bowl flag football game that raised 2,170 yuan via team fees and beverage sales.
