Donation: Great Leap Funds Two Cataract Operations

Carl Setzer of Great Leap Brewery offered to fund two cataract surgeries for maovember for a total of 1600 yuan. The offer came on Halloween, even before our launch party, and meant a nice start to the campaign. Given Setzer’s busy schedule brewing beer and my own equally busy slate drinking it, we only managed a confab yesterday in order to process said donation. There is a photo of that exchange above as well, for pure entertainment purposes, some photos from the Great Leap Halloween party, most of which some guy dressed up as Super Mario managed to dominate.

Maovember Moves Past 70,000-Yuan Mark

Standard

With another successful week under its belt, maovember has its new goal of raising 80,000 yuan, and thus funding 100 cataract surgeries via Orbis, well within sight.

Cash on hand stands at 70,642 yuan. That includes 41,992 yuan in events after a strong week with The Irish Volunteer, Paddy O’Shea’s and Mashup / Deli de Luxe, 18,000 yuan in donations, including several new Super VIPs, and 10,650 yuan in pin sales. There is still quite a bit of pin revenue to be accumulated and that will add several thousand yuan more to the total.

Upcoming maovember events include a charity quiz at Q Mex on Wednesday, a mustache bash at Paddy O’Shea’s on Friday, and The Beijing Beatles at George’s Bar on Saturday, with several more to be announced.

Enjoy classics like Maogical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submaorine and Love Mao Do when The Beijing Beatles play a free show at George’s Bar this Sunday in support of maovember. In a significant spacial upgrade on their maovember gig last year at tiny Two Guys and a Pie (see here), Sunday’s event — slated from 3 PM to 6 PM — will see the Fab Four enjoy the spacious stage and awesome sound system at George’s.

Patrons can also join in the fun. We’ll have a maximum of five people each take their turn singing a Beatles song with the band. The performance fee is 100 yuan per person and goes to maovember. Unless two people want to sing the same song, then it goes to the highest bidder.

In terms of beverages, we will have beer at 25 yuan per bottle and wine at 25 yuan per glass, with all proceeds to maovember.

More details coming in the next 48 hours on food, games and a potential Beatlejuice shot for this special Beijing Beatles-George’s maovember event.

Sunday FUNday: Beer Pong with Mashup, Big Lebowski with CHEERS

Two fun events today for those who want to get into the maovember spirit.

First up, and hard on the heels of yesterday’s Turkey Bowl, is the monthly beer pong tournament with Mashup Sports at Kokomo in Sanlitun. The games get underway at 3 PM with team fees going to maovember — you can sign up here. We’ll also have some shots for charity.

Then, a short walk away, it’s The Big Lebowski drinking game at CHEERS on Xindong Road (see map here) at 7:30 PM. Drink when someone bowls a strike, when The Dude puts on sunglasses, when — well, whenever someone does something on the list of rules. We’ll be drinking CHEERS delicious mulled wine at 20 yuan per serving, with all proceeds to maovember.

(Note: The CHEERS shop is in that double strip mall just across the road — to the south — of the Canadian Embassy, the ones that also include No More Bunz.)

Event: Irish Volunteer Raises 17000+ Yuan with Full Day of Festivities

The second annual Charity Corntoss Classic headlined a stellar Saturday at The Irish Volunteer / Hockey Bar that raised 17,680 yuan for maovember. Along with the tournament, the full day of festivities included Pickle Zachs, pies, a sausage-eating contest and a raffle that included an overnight stay at The Crowne Plaza Lido.

A large crowd watched the sixteen-team corntoss tourney throughout the afternoon and early evening, with Corn Thugs-Hominy ultimately emerging as the winner after a narrow two-point victory. Each 100-yuan team fee was donated to maovember, totaling 1600 yuan.

During the afternoon, attendees could partake of a “Pickle Zach“: a shot of moonshine followed by a shot of Corner Melt pickle juice. Shots were 30 yuan and, with tips included, raised 1900 yuan.

They could also buy raffle tickets at 30 yuan each or two for 50 yuan, with prizes from Catherine de France, East Meets West, Hockey Night in Beijing and Oasis, among others, up for grabs (see full list here). The tickets raised 2200 yuan and, when Marty Handley won the hotel package, resold it for 1000 yuan and donated the cash, the raffle totaled 3200 yuan.

And the hungry could buy sausage rolls and pies from the mobile Two Guys and a Pie unit, with 20 yuan or every 30 yuan sale to maovember. That raised 580 yuan.

The activities wrapped up with a sausage-eating contest called The Homewrecker Challenge, so-called due to the potential destructive power of the links in question. Four teams competed to finish one of these monsters donated by Andy’s Craft Sausage, with the BratFirsts seizing victory. Each 100-yuan team fee went to mavember for a total of 400 yuan.

Finally, Irish Volunteer co-owner George Smith, who is also director of North Asia for Orbis, this year’s maovember charity partner, made a 10,000 yuan donation on behalf of the bar. He cited the comradery of the 2014 campaign as so many of the city’s smaller bars and restaurants have come together to easily surpass this year’s goal and are now closing in on the even bigger one of 100 cataract surgeries.

Event: Mashup, Deli de Luxe Team to Raise 2000+ Yuan

Standard

Mashup Sports and Deli de Luxe teamed up to help maovember during The Turkey Bowl held on Saturday. The Turkey Bowl is an annual flag football game organized by Mashup. This year, Deli de Luxe provided coffee and hot chocolate — with optional Bailey’s shot — for both players and fans alike.

With Mashup donating 1200 yuan in player fees and Deli de Luxe donating the 970 yuan raised via beverage sales, the event translated into 2170 yuan for maovember. And a nice day spent outside for all concerned.
